Does anybody know why the media keeps wrongfully stating that Whitey Bulger influenced "The Departed"?

I think it was just hype to get you to see the movie. I am from the Boston area originally and I kept wondering why they implied that Jack Nicholson's character was Whitey Jimmy Bulger.
